Tamar Taliashvili, an MP from the ruling Georgian Dream party, on Friday accused a part of the political opposition of “targeted sabotage” to create problems for Georgia's European integration process and prevent the country from receiving an European Union candidate status.

At a plenary meeting of the Parliament, Taliashvili called on the opposition MPs to stop “sabotaging Georgia's European integration” in parallel to the ongoing deliberation by the European Commission on Georgia’s membership bid.

All your words and actions are aimed at preventing Georgia's European integration. Today, it is my obligation, as well as that of every citizen of Georgia, to call on the opposition to stop sabotaging Georgia on the path to European integration,” the ruling party MP said.

Irakli Kobakhidze, the Chairman of the ruling party, on Monday called on the “radical opposition” in the country to “stop campaigning against” Georgia being granted EU candidate status.

Kobakhidze said Georgia’s status in being ahead of fellow membership applicants Moldova and Ukraine “in all parameters” relating to their membership bids was “widely recognised”.

On May 10, Georgia’s Prime Minister handed over the second completed part of the EU membership questionnaire, filled out by the country ahead of schedule, to Carl Hartzell, the Head of the EU Delegation to Georgia.

Based on the questionnaire, the European Commission will prepare an evaluation report on granting the candidate status to the country, with the relevant decision expected by the end of June.
