Iceland, as a founding member of NATO, can work to support Georgia’s “immediate” integration into the alliance, Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir, a member of the EU-Iceland Joint Parliamentary Committee, said on Wednesday.
Gunnarsdóttir made the comment following a meeting between a Georgian Parliamentary delegation and the Foreign Affairs Committee of Iceland earlier during the day.
“Iceland, as the founder of NATO, can clearly apply and pressures that Georgia will be taken into NATO immediately. A quick reaction sends a decisive message to Putin,” she noted after the session.
Gunnarsdóttir also said Georgia’s accession to NATO would be a “clear message” against Russian aggression, and said she hoped her country would make a significant contribution at the June Summit of the alliance in Madrid.
The meeting involved a discussion on Georgia’s integration into the Euro-Atlantic structures and prospects for the development of bilateral relations between Iceland and Georgia.
