The Tbilisi City Court has found five Georgian citizens guilty of an attempt to join the Islamic State terrorist organisation in Syria and support of its activities, the Court announced on Tuesday.
The ruling said the five individuals had attempted to travel to the Middle East to join the ranks of IS, with the inquiry based on evidence from the Prosecutor General’s Office.
Their effort was prevented “in a timely manner” by the Prosecutor’s Office and the state Counter-Terrorism Centre, the former body said.
One of the five offenders has been charged with membership in terrorist organisation and assisting the other members of the group in the effort, leading to a sentence of 12 years behind the bars.
The other four have been charged with the former crime, and are set to face 10 years in prison.
