There have been no demands from the Ukrainian authorities to their Georgian counterparts on sanctions against Russia, as Georgia is already a part of all international measures imposed on the Kremlin following its invasion of Ukraine, Parliament Vice Speaker Archil Talakvadze said in an interview released by the Georgian Public Broadcaster on Sunday.

Talakvadze was responding to recent debates on the Georgian Government’s stance on sanctions, and speaking following a visit by a Georgian Parliamentary delegation to Ukraine on Sunday. The Parliament official said the visit had shown Georgia’s support to the country and its people defending themselves from the aggression.

There were no ‘categorical demands’ or ‘conditions’ imposed by Ukraine on sanctions [against Russia], for the simple reason that Georgia is a part of all major international sanctions. It is simply impossible for anyone in Georgia to circumvent sanctions. Georgia, in this process, as in many other parts, is a member of the Western society and the Western family,” Talakvadze said.

He also added his Government was part of “important documents and systems”, both logistical and customs-related, that made smuggling of sanctioned goods through its territory “impossible”.

Talakvadze’s comment follows the Ministry of Finance of Georgia responding to allegations by some Ukrainian authorities on April 4, about Russia creating smuggling channels for sanctioned products using Georgian territory. The Ministry called the statements “a completely baseless and absurd accusation”.
