Moldova does not recognise the validity of the so-called “elections” set to take place in the Russian-occupied Tskhinvali (South Ossetia) region of Georgia on Sunday, the Moldovan foreign office said on Friday.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Moldova reaffirmed its “firm support” for Georgia's independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders, in comments on the vote to be organised by the de facto authorities in Tskhinvali.

We fully share the concerns of the Georgian constitutional authorities about the intention to hold the so-called “referendum” in this region of Georgia, and condemn this violation of the fundamental rules and principles of international law enshrined in the UN Charter and the Helsinki Final Act,” the statement said.
