Prescribing psychotropic medications will only be allowed electronically starting April 11 in Georgia, the Ministry of Health of Georgia announced on Tuesday.

Doctors will be able to prescribe only generic medications to their patients, without specifying a brand of the drug, in an effort to create a transparent pharmaceutical market and ensure quality and affordable drugs for the Georgian citizens.

Pharmacists will offer customers three cheapest medications from the ‘positive list’ of generic drugs developed by the Health Ministry, with the customers themselves making the choice”, the ministry said.

The change will apply to Group II drugs, including antibiotics, medicines used for cardiovascular diseases, as well as hormonal, endocrine and oncology products.
