Georgian singer and former artistic director of Erisioni ensemble Jemal Chkuaseli has passed away aged 86.

Chkuaseli who reportedly had Parkinson's disease, died on December 17 in hospital.

Ckhuaseli was awarded the title of the People's Artist of Georgia in 1990. He received the Medal of Honour in 1995.

Georgian high officials, including Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili,  Parliament Speaker Kakha Kuchava, Vice Speaker Archil Talakvadze, Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze, and the ruling Georgian Dream Chairman Irakli Kobakhidze have expressed their condolences to Chkuaseli's family and friends.
