Party leaders are demanding ex-president Mikheil Saakashvili’s transfer to a civil hospital, a fully proportional electoral system and snap elections, as well as protesting the municipal election run-off results.
Zurab Japaridze, founder of the Party, stated that the ‘regime [i.e. the ruling party] will be defeated by protests from the people.’
Girchi -More Freedom reported that about three of their members have been arrested by police.
The opposition has been demanding the transfer of Saakashvili to a civil hospital since he began a hunger strike in Rustavi prison.
He has been on hunger strike for more than 40 days as of today.
The ex-president was arrested on October 1 ahead of local elections, and is currently serving his sentence of six years' imprisonment for abuse of power.
As for snap elections, the ruling Georgian Dream (GD) party was obliged by the EU-mediated April 19 agreement to hold early parliamentary elections if it received less than 43% of votes in local elections in October.
However, in late July the GD withdrew from the agreement – which ended months of political standoff caused by parliamentary elections in 2020 – and received 47% of the vote in the proportional part of the race.
The head of the largest opposition party United National Movement (UNM), Nika Melia, announced a permanent protest in the country on November 8 after Saakashvili was transferred to Gldani No. 18 prison hospital against his will.
