The Georgian Foreign Ministry has denied the alleged summoning of the Georgian Ambassador to Ukraine Teimuraz Sharashenidze to the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry over the recent arrest of former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili.
The ministry has stated that the diplomat of the Georgian embassy will hold a meeting with Ukrainian authorities regarding the case.
The diplomat of the embassy (Georgian embassy to Ukraine) will exchange information with the Ukrainian side regarding the arrest of Mikheil Saakashvili who is a Ukrainian citizen,” the statement of the ministry reads.
The question regarding the summoning of the Ambassador of Georgia emerged after the spokesperson of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry Oleg Nikolenko tweeted about it noting that the head of the Georgian embassy has been invited ‘to receive official information on the grounds and circumstances of Saakashvili’s detention.’
Бачимо інформацію в ЗМІ про затримання громадянина України Міхеіла Саакашвілі в Грузії. До Міністерства закордонних справ запрошено керівника посольства Грузії в Україні для отримання офіційної інформації про підстави та обставини такого затримання.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s press secretary Sergii Nykyforov has also posted on his Facebook page that ‘President Zelensky is concerned about such news’ noting that Ukraine waits for clarification of the circumstances of Saakashvili’s detention.
The Embassy of Ukraine in Georgia has not yet received official information about the detention. But our consuls are already working to provide Mikheil Saakashvili with all the help,” Nykyforov states.
The third president of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili has been detained on October 1 in Tbilisi and transferred to the 12th penitentiary institution in Rustavi.
Saakashvili is convicted to six years of imprisonment in two criminal cases while four other cases are being heard in Tbilisi City Court.
