The number of passengers who took regular or charter flights from or two Batumi International Airport in the Black Sea Adjara region of Georgia has increased 16% in January-May 2021 year-on-year, announces Georgian Economy Minister Natia Turnava.
She said that Batumi International Airport is the first airport of Georgia where the number of passengers has increased since the Covid-19 pandemic.
There are 100-105 flights a week at Batumi International Airport, which is about the same number as it was in the same period of 2019. This is a very good sign. We expect that Tbilisi and Kutaisi international airports will soon reach the same level as it was before the pandemic", Turnava said.
Batumi International Airport has recently expanded and is now capable of serving 1.2 million passengers annually.
Passenger flow in 2019 hit more than 600,000.
In total $17 million was invested in the project which employed about 300 locals.
A new terminal has been opened at the airport of the Georgian Black Sea resort town of Batumi that will now be able to serve 1.2 million passengers annually. The expansion of Batumi International Airport was conditioned by the increase of passenger flow, which exceeded 600,000 in 2019.
Starting today international flights are resuming in Georgia and all airline companies that have already operated or plan to enter the country's aviation market in the future are able to operate regular flights. Air traffic in Georgia was completely suspended in March 2020. In July 2020, Georgia opened its borders to travellers from Germany, France, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia.
The tourist season has opened in the Balck Sea Adjara region of Georgia today with special events to create a summer mood for the visitors. Locals and visitors of the main summer destination of Adjara, Batumi, will enjoy a kite show, open air ballet, theatrical performances and big band jazz music throughout the day.
In January-April of 2021, revenue from foreign tourism decreased by 77.5% year-on-year in Georgia, says Galt & Taggart, an investment banking and investment management services company in Georgia.
Local airline company Georgian Airways is launching Tbilisi-Minsk-Tbilisi flights on August 11, announces the Civil Aviation Agency of Georgia. The flights between the Georgian and the Belarusian capitals will be carried out three times a week, on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays until October 30.
Jordanian airline company Fly Jordan will resume flights to Georgia starting August 12, announces the Georgian Civil Aviation Agency. Fly Jordan will connect the Jordanian capital of Amman to Georgia's Black Sea resort town of Batumi. The flights will be carried out until September 30 once a week, on Thursdays.
