At the initiative of Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili, assistance to socially vulnerable children will be doubled starting July 1. Instead of existing 50 GEL, assistance for socially vulnerable children will be 100 GEL in Georgia.
Garibashvili said that the number of children receiving assistance will also increase.
Instead of existing 100,000 scores, children living in families with scores less than 120,000 will be able to receive 100 GEL assistance.
Over 215,000 children will receive doubled social assistance starting July 1 throughout the country.
We [the Georgian gov’t] have taken a number of steps to protect the rights of children, to ensure equal conditions for their healthy living, development and self-realisation. However, we are still far from the desired situation. Poverty among children remains a challenge. This problem is particularly acute in pandemic conditions. The Georgian government aims to improve social policies in order to reduce child poverty in the country”, said Garibashvili.
A total of 145 million GEL will be allocated from the budget annually for the program.
In Georgia 541,764 people, or 14.5% of the Georgian population receive social assistance from the state and this number has increased by 83,296 individuals in the last one year, announces the Social Service Agency of Georgia.
The Georgian public defender and UNICEF Georgia have stated on the International Children’s Day today that the coronavirus pandemic has further aggravated the situation of children’s rights in Georgia. Acting Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze has announced that socially vulnerable pensioners will receive 500 GEL vouchers to purchase various prescribed medications. At the municipal government session held earlier today, Kaladze said the new program will cost 20 million GEL and have 40,000 beneficiaries.
The number of people receiving social assistance in Georgia has reached 633,000 in October 2021, Social Service Agency reports. As of today, 17% of the Georgian population receive social assistance, while the total amount of allowance given to the socially vulnerable exceeded 43 million GEL (about $13.61 m. / €11.79 m.) in October.
