Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili has appointed Shalva Lomidze as the Head of the Intelligence Service of Georgia.
So far, Shalva Lomidze has been the Acting Head of the Georgian Intelligence Service.
In 2014-2020, Lomidze served as the First Deputy Head of the Intelligence Service.
At various times Lomidze was the Head of the Main Division of the Information and Analytics Department on the Interior Ministry. He also worked in various positions in the Counterintelligence Department of the Agency, as well as in the Counterintelligence Service of the State Security Service.
Head of the Georgian Intelligence Service and the Secretary of the National Security Council Levan Izoria has resigned, becoming the country’s new ambassador to Germany.
Georgia’s Interior Minister Giorgi Mgebrishvili announced at today’s special briefing that he had dismissed the head of Georgia’s Border Police and a chief of the Counter Intelligence Agency in relation with Azeri journalist Afghan Mukhtarli, who vanished from Tbilisi on May 29 and resurfaced in custody in Baku the next day.
Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili announced the MIA would undergo the reform process, with one aspect of the reforms enabling the Security Service to be separated from the Ministry.
