Georgian Foreign Minister David Zalkaliani has welcomed the appointment of Marek Szczygiel as new head of the European Monitoring mission (EUMM) to Georgia.

Szczygiel, a long serving Polish diplomat, was officially appointed as the EUMM head earlier today.

Erik Hoeg, a senior Danish diplomat who had served as head of the EUMM to Georgia since December 2017, ended his tenure in December 2019.

Kate Fearon, who served as the EUMM Acting head until Szczygiel's appointment, has also welcomed him in Georgia.

Since its deployment in 2008, the EUMM has been patrolling day and night, particularly in the areas adjacent to the occupation line of the two Russia-occupied regions of Georgia: Abkhazia and Tskhinvali (South Ossetia).
