The government should start thinking about the privatisation of state-owned enterprises, said Acting Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia earlier today in parliament, noting that this does not apply to strategic companies.

He noted that the government will have to make concrete decisions regarding state-owned companies, the efficiency of which is in question and is a burden on the state budget.

We need to start improving the quality of management of [state-owned enterprises], but at the same time we need to start thinking about their privatisation,” he said.

This does not apply to strategic enterprises and this should not be the subject of speculation,” noted Gakharia, adding, “Everyone should understand that this is a necessary step to involve all the state-owned assets in the economy and thus improve the country’s economy.”

Over 120 million GEL has been earned from the privatisation of state buildings in 2020 despite reduced business activity amid pandemic, said Georgian Acting Economy Minister Natia Turnava yesterday.
