The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) will announce its judgement on the Russia-Georgia war of August 2008 on January 21, 2020.

Justice Minister nominee Gocha Lortkipanidze stated earlier today that the ‘truth of Georgia’ at the court ‘is supported by evidence’.

Georgia demands that the European Court of Human Rights find Russia responsible for violating several articles of the European Convention of Human Rights, including:

  • the right to life
  • the prohibition of torture
  • the right to liberty and security
  • the right to respect private and family life
  • the right to an effective legal remedy
  • the right to property
  • the right to education
  • the right to free movement

Lortkipanidze, who was recently elected the first Georgian judge at the Hague-based International Criminal Court (ICC) meanwhile noted that the ICC Trust Fund for Victims (TFV) has approved a three-year €600,000 programme to assist the victims of the 2008 war

The Board of Directors of the TFV approved an assistance programme for Georgia  on November 10, 2020. This includes medical treatment, psychological rehabilitation such as trauma counselling, as well as material support including livelihood assistance.
