Professional and amateur photographers in Georgia have been asked to submit their best works on the subject of stories that illustrate the country for the first edition of KIU Photo Contest, the latest project coming out of the recently launched Kutaisi International University.

The competition was formally established last month, with organisers opening submissions on Monday for its inaugural edition, which will award prizes to three participants in each of its three sections - categories for professional and amateur photographers and the Single Shot section.

Calling creatives aged between 18-30 to submit their works - three photographs at most - organisers also unveiled the theme of the contest, reflected by its title Georgia – Stories told with the images.

Photographs entering the competition will be judged by a jury panel involving foreign and Georgian professionals. Georgia's own award-winning photographer Natela Grigalashvili will be flanked by Magnum Photos' Thomas Dworzak, Washington Post Director of Photography MaryAnne Golon, LagosPhoto Director Azu Nwagbogu and Vogue Italia Visual Director Alessia Glaviano.

Projects completed within the past five years and in-progress works are both eligible for consideration, with a prize pool set to award all nine winners money prizes in addition to formal honours. Further details from organisers are available on the official website.

The photography competition follows KIU Mural Fest, a festival of street art, launched by the university last month and resulting in international artists travelling to the western city of Kutaisi to work on facades of the university campus, unveiled this year as an ambitious international project for creating a regional hub for high-quality education.

Winners of the first KIU Photo Contest will be revealed in spring of 2021.
