Chairman of Dmansi City Council Merab Okriashvili has been attacked and injured earlier today, though police have yet to identify the attackers.

Merab Okriashvili is a relative of Kakha Okriashvili, a majoritarian candidate of the opposition United National Movement (UNM) party for the Bolnisi-Dmanisi-Tetritskaro-Tsalka district.

UNM member Dimitri Shashkini said the reason for the attack was ‘revenge against Merab Okriashvili’, as he received 76% of the vote in the Dmanisi Municipality in yesterday’s parliamentary elections.

Merab Okriashvili has been transferred to New Hospitals in Tbilisi. He received injuries to his leg… This was revenge for the result which Kakha Okriashvili has shown in the Dmanisi municipality”, said Shashkini.

Kakha Okriashvili told the media that Merab Okriashvili was actively involved in his election campaign, and that the incident may be related to politics.

Okriashvili also said he has no idea who could have been the attackers.
