Georgia marks Mtkvari River Protection Day

Georgia and the neighbouring countries of Azerbaijan and Armenia are marking Mtkvari Protection Day of the shared Mtkvari River. 

The day has been celebrated in Georgia since 1999.

Andro Aslanishvili, head of the National Environmental Agency of Georgia and experts in water quality, atmospheric air and soil quality have taken samples of the Mtkvari river. Tests will be conducted for organic and inorganic contaminants and heavy metals in the agency’s laboratory, the results of which will be known in a few days.

The National Environment Agency monthly monitors the quality of the river at 19 different points.

Mtkvari is one of Georgia’s main aquatic arteries. Its basin includes north-eastern Turkey, central and eastern Georgia, almost the whole of Azerbaijan, Armenia and north-western Iran.

The total area of the river basin is 188,000 square kilometres.
