The poverty rate in Georgia has dropped 10.5 per cent since 2012, Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia said in parliament earlier today.

He also noted that child poverty has been reduced from 34.7 per cent to 25.5 per cent according to the World Bank.

Of course, I understand that poverty has been a structural problem for our country’s economy over the last few decades. It is a fact. In 2012, the poverty rate was over 30 per cent in Georgia. Since then, the rate has been cut in half…Despite the severe economic crisis, pensions will increase starting July 1, 2020. It is extremely hard for me to talk about these issues, as I understand that behind all these numbers, we face the daily hard lives of our citizens,”, Gakharia said while responding to a question of Roman Gotsiridze, a member of the United National Movement, as to ‘why the country’s population is in extreme poverty’.

PM Gakharia also mentioned that one-third of the Georgian budget is allocated to social needs, pointing out funding of the health system was 332 million GEL in 2012, while today it is 1.76 billion GEL.

Gakharia has appeared in parliament for the second time this week to respond to legislators’ questions about the government’s response to the coronavirus crisis and economic issues.
