40 mln GEL to be allocated for rural support programme

Georgian government is allocating 40 million GEL ($13.9 mln/€12.5 mln) in 2020 in the framework of government’s rural support programme to finance the projects being implemented in rural areas of Georgia.

The rural support programme, implemented in 2009, allows 3,700 rural communities across Georgia to decide with the government what projects are most important for their particular area. The programme ended in 2016, but started up again on January 1, 2019 “in a renewed format.”

In 2019, about 4,800 infrastructure projects have been carried out in the framework of the rural support programme.

Projects were chosen by the local citizens. The decisions were made at the meetings held in the municipalities of Georgia.

The number of projects implemented in 2019 is distributed among the regions of Georgia as follows:

• Guria – 376 projects
• Imereti – 1,042 projects
• Kakheti – 366 projects
• Mtskheta-Mtianeti – 536 projects
• Racha-Letchkhumi-Kvemo Svaneti – 275 projects
• Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti – 1,061 projects
• Samtskhe-Javakheti – 309 projects
• Kvemo Kartli – 399 projects
• Shida Kartli – 447 projects

In 2019 funds were distributed in the following categories: reconstruction of roads, installation of street lights, installation of sports facilities, the reconstruction of water and sewage systems, the reconstruction of cemeteries, cut and clearance of drainage channels.
