UNICEF head to Georgia Ghassan Khalil has praised the reforms of the Georgian Education Ministry focused on the interests of children and youth in the field of education during the crisis caused by COVID-19.

Khalil has sent an open letter to the Minister of Education, Science and Sports of Georgia, Mikheil Chkhenkeli, in which he thanks Chkhenkeli for the long-term fruitful cooperation between the Georgian Education Ministry and the United Nations Children’s Fund and congratulates him on the success of the ministry’s efforts in ensuring continuous studies during the pandemic.

We highly appreciate the reform agenda under your leadership in the field of education, which is focused on the interests of children and youth. I sincerely congratulate you on the success in overcoming the challenges caused by COVID-19 during the unprecedented crisis”, says Khalil in the open letter.

On late March, the Georgian government stated that schools and high educational institutions would remain closed to prevent the spread of coronavirus, after which the Georgian Public Broadcaster (GPB) together with the Georgian Education Ministry has been holding live lessons (“TV School”) for school students in three languages – Georgian, Armenian and Azerbaijani.

The Georgian Education Ministry’s response to the coronavirus outbreak was also praised by Anthony Salcito, Vice-President of Education at Microsoft Corporation, as an example of “tremendous resilience” in adapting to the pandemic.
