Public transport will operate for the first time between the Georgian capital city of Tbilisi and the small suburb city of Rustavi, which is situated 25 km southeast of Tbilisi, and will benefit about 30,000 passengers, announced Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze today.

Currently, only private micro-buses run between the two cities.

About 30,000 people commute between Tbilisi and Rustavi during the day... We have received many letters from young people that the issue of transport on the Tbilisi-Rustavi road is a serious problem and a big inconvenience for people who have to travel between these two cities daily", Kaladze said.

Kaladze tasked his Deputy Maia Bitadze to present a plan on how the new buses will operate between Tbilisi and Rustavi.

However, the exact date when the new buses will start operating is unknown at this stage.

Kaladze noted that modern transport will allow citizens to travel more comfortably and will ease traffic jams on the road.

He also announced that in the near future 100 new 12-meter buses will begin operating in Tbilisi, with additional introductions of modern buses to follow.
