Georgia was elected president of the International Anti-Corruption Academy (IACA) in Vienna, Austria yesterday.
Deputy Justice Minister of Georgia Gocha Lortkipanidze will serve as Georgia’s representative in the international organization and educational institution aimed at analysing challenges in terms of combating corruption and training professionals.
Successful anti-corruption reforms conducted by Georgia caused its election as the Academy President,” the Georgian Justice Ministry stated in a press release.
Georgia was the Academy Vice President from September 2018. It joined the academy in 2015.
The Georgian Justice Ministry hosted an IACA Master’s program in 2017.
Students from 16 countries passed the final module of the programme in Georgia as it was assessed as ‘an ideal location for meeting efficient implementation of anti-corruption methods and practical examples’ by the international academic programmes office.
IACA also plans to conduct the 2019 Master’s course in Georgia.
Georgia has cemented its position as one of anti-corruption leaders among Eastern European and Central Asian countries, according to Transparency International’s (TI) recently-published 2017 Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI). Georgia ranks 46th out of 180 countries, ahead of Eastern Partnership nations.
The Council of Europe’s anti-corruption body GRECO published a report on December 19 looking at how Georgia has implemented the recommendations on dealing with corruption offences, and specifically on the transparency of party funding.
The Government of Georgia has adopted an 2017-2018 anti-corruption strategy which is focused on prevention and higher level transparency in state institutions.
Georgia’s ranking in the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) improved by four spots in 2016, with the country now ranked in 44th place out of 176 countries.
A working group of the Georgian Anti-Corruption Council discussed its upcoming plans for 2019-2020 at the Georgian Justice Ministry today. Old strategy documents, surveys by NGOs and international organisations and current risks were used to identify priorities of the anti-corruption policy.
Transparency International has released its Corruption Perceptions Index 2019, with Georgia ranking 44th among 180 countries and territories across the world, standing on top of all Eastern European and Central Asian countries.In the index, which measures sector corruption according to experts and business people, Georgia has received 56 scores of total 100.
