Bail has been set at 2,000 GEL for former Tbilisi Mayor Gigi Ugulava, who was charged with physical assault after a recent incident involving athletes at Tbilisi International Airport.

The current member of opposition European Georgia has also to provide his ID card and a passport to the prosecution.

Ugulava wrote on his Facebook page ahead of the court hearing that neither he, nor his lawyer Giorgi Gelkhauri would participate "in this nonsense".

He considers that everything at the airport "was staged" as the incident happened in the most protected place at the airport, beyond passport control area.

The former mayor now has one month to post bail. The next court hearing has been set on January 30, 2020.
