MP of the ruling Georgian Dream (GD) party Akaki Zoidze, who chaired the Healthcare Committee in parliament, has announced he is leaving the ruling party and politics, citing the rejection of the GD-proposed election bill as the reason.

Zoidze is the 13th MP to leave the GD since the rejection of the bill on November 14, which offered the early-transition to a fully proportional electoral system starting from 2020 instead of scheduled 2024.

I was unable to persuade some of the ruling party MPs that the early transition to the fully proportional electoral system would have ensured a more constructive political environment and the preservation of stability in the country. I no longer see myself in current politics,” Zoidze said.

He stated that he is devoted to the values the ruling party had back in 2016, when Zoidze entered the parliament via the GD party list.

I will stand by the Georgian Dream in any kind intention for the country, from a different place,” Zoidze said, who is likely to continue his activities as an expert in health issues.

Current head of Chkhorotsku police in western Georgia Jumber Izoria [who was also on the party list] may replace Zoidze in parliament.
