The presentation of the publication Georgian National Guidelines for the Production of Quality Honey was held at Expo Georgia on November 14.
The guidelines are based on practical experience and give honey producers recommendations how to produce high-quality honey which can be exported to the EU market.
Georgian small and medium-sized enterprises have had the opportunity to export honey to 500 million people on the EU market for almost three years now.
One of the main challenges [for exporting products to the EU] is ensuring that the right standards are met…I hope that the National Guidelines presented today will inspire [honey producers] to follow great example [of the first exporters of Georgian honey to the EU market, whose honey quality meets and even exceeds EU standards] and to produce safe and healthy products for Georgian and EU customers alike,” noted Carl Hartzell, the Ambassador of the European Union to Georgia.

We are glad that in close cooperation with the EU-GIZ project, a guideline document has been developed, which will, hopefully, assist beekeepers and honey producers in the production of high-quality products,” said Khatia Tsilosani, the Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection.
This work brought us to the first export of Georgian premium honey to the EU. We have proven that Georgian honey can be competitive on the European market and sells at very attractive prices,” noted Katja Kammerer, the Programme Director for GIZ Private Sector Development and TVET South Caucasus.
Under the EU-GIZ project, Georgian honey under the brand of Tapli which includes high quality honey of local Georgian producers has been introduced to European market.
The guidelines were developed by German and Georgian specialists under the EU-funded project ‘SME Development and DCFTA in Georgia’.
