A 50-megawatt wind power plant will be built near the village Nigoza in the Gori municipality, which will generate 200 million kilowatt-hours annually, announced Economy Minister Natia Turnava earlier today.
This is a very important project, not only because locally-based electricity will be generated, but also because we have taken another step to establish a greener, diversified, renewable energy sector," Turnava said.
Turnava noted that today Georgian renewable energy sector is mainly represented by hydro electric power plants, but “in the modern world there must be a diversification [of generating renewable energy] and the aspiration to develop wind and solar energy.”
Turnava said that one of the largest Turkish companies Çalik Holding is interested in investing in the project.
Natia Turnava said that several other projects are being prepared also to develop Georgian wind and solar energy. These projects will also be presented to the government.
A wind energy plant in Gori in the Shida Kartli region of Georgia will be privatised in a month or month and a half, Georgian Economy Minister Natia Turnava said. Turnava stated certain facilities belonging to the state are difficult to sell as the privatisation process requires special preparation in advance.
A new factory has opened in Georgia’s third largest city of Kutaisi to produce solar panels that will be exported to the European Union, United States and Middle East. The factory was opened today by German company AE SOLAR, which is one of the world’s leaders in producing solar panels.
The government of Georgia has allocated 2 million GEL (about 0.73m/€0.65m) to install solar panels in areas of Georgia where there is still no consistent electricity supply.
Georgia’s first wind farm, a 20MW Kartli Wind Power Plant, has generated 103,923,000 kWh of power since it opened in 2016 in central Georgia’s Shida Kartli region.
In 2019, Georgian electricity imports increased by 7.5 per cent and exports decreased by 58.7 per cent.
