26 buildings to be renovated at historic Gudiashvili Square in Old Tbilisi

A total of 26 buildings will be near historic Gudiashvili Square located in the old part of the Georgian capital. 22 of the buildings are listed as having cultural heritage status, announced Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze yesterday.

The renovation of Gudiashvili Square began last year. Currently, 14 buildings are being renovated on the square, while 12 have been added to the list of buildings waiting for an upgrade.

Kaladze thanked people involved in the process of restoring the area – in particular, art historians and archaeologists, noting that a number of interesting artifacts have been uncovered during the work back in June 2018. 

Decorated pieces of ceramic cutlery, a compartment for a clay oven and other discoveries were made during work on the Old Town district of the city.

Preliminary estimates by historians have dated the items back to the 16th-17th Centuries.

Georgian Prime Minister Gakharia also spoke about the complete renovation of Gudiashvili Square yesterday and said that soon, one more important tourist destination would be added to Tbilisi.

In 2020, an addition 25 million GEL ($8.41 mln/€7.6 mln) was allocated by the state. The total cost for the renovation of Gudiashvili Square is 62 million GEL ($20.85 mln/€18.84 mln).
