New law comes into force ensuring safe working conditions

A new law on labour safety came into effect on September 1, the aim of which is to further strengthen workers’ rights to safe working conditions. 

The law stipulates that labour safety laws will apply not only to hazardous professions but to all sectors of  economic activity.

Employers will be obliged to appoint a certified labour safety specialist if they have more than 20 employees.

The duties of a labour safety specialist can be carried out by an employer in companies with less than 20 employees.

If the company prevents the supervisory body from carrying out the inspection, it will be fined up to 4,000 GEL for an individual and up to 14,000 GEL for a person registered as a VAT (value added tax) taxpayer.

The new law obliges employers to compensate employees for injuries at the workplace, including injuries resulting from occupational illness. Until now, the law covered only hazardous, harmful and dangerous fields.
