The flag and emblem of Tbilisi, the capital city of Georgia, which were an exception in 1989 under the Soviet Union, are to be changed as they do not meet the mandatory rules of heraldry - dictating the laws of the use of symbols in the country.
The existing flag, which was made in 1989 depicts a cross, “which was a big achievement at that time,” as the Soviet Union was against Christian traditions, David Chkhaidze from Georgia’s State Heraldic Committee says.
When golden figures are shown on a white background, it is a violation of heraldic rules. The only exception is the symbol of the Christ Jerusalem cross,” Chkhaidze said.
A commission has already been created to provide a new flag and an emblem for Georgian capital.
