Georgia's national rugby team will face Scotland and Russia in three summer test games, two of them in Tbilisi, before Milton Haig's team departs for the upcoming Rugby World Cup in Japan in September.

The Lelos have arranged for a busy set of fixtures ahead of the international tournament, with the two home tests to be held in the capital within annual TBC Rugby Series calendar before the team travels to Scotland for a third match.

The three-game preparation for the World Cup will kick off on August 27 when the Rugby Europe-winning Georgian squad hosts their principled opponents Russia on Mikheil Meskhi stadium in Tbilisi.

Four days later, Haig's players will take to the pitch on Dinamo Arena, the principal stadium of the city, to play their Scottish counterparts, who will become the first "tier 1" national squad to play a test game in Georgia.

The New Zealander told reporters the latter game was "significant not only for the team but also for the [whole of Georgia], as we've been preparing for this for a long time."

The head coach also said the summer tests would represent the "climax" of World Cup preparations for his team and the final opportunity for home fans to see their favourites before the tournament.

By scheduling the two games only four days apart, the coaching team of the Lelos aims to replicate similar calendar for their World Cup encounters in Japan, which kicks off on September 20.

Scotland will then return the favour and play hosts at Murrayfield for a game on September 6.

The two teams first played at the 2011 World Cup, with the Scots winning 15-6. The second of two previous encounters between the two sides came in 2016 in Kilmarnock, where the hosts again prevailed with a score 43-16.
