Armenian President, PM offer condolences to Georgia over mining accident

The President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan has offered his deep condolences to President Giorgi Margvelashvili and the Georgian population over the tragic accident at the Mindeli coal mine in western Georgia that has claimed the lives of six and injured three.

Armenian Prime Minister Karen Karapetyan has also offered his condolences to Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili.

On behalf of the government of Armenia and myself, I want to express great sadness over the tragedy at the Mindeli coal mine and offer my deep condolences to you and the Georgian people”, Karapetyan said.

He said Armenia stands with the families of those who have lost their lives and the rest of the Georgian population in these difficult moments.

The government of Georgia declared April 6 as a mourning day after the accident.

Georgian national flags were flying at half-mast today at all government buildings across the country in mourning of those who have died.

An investigation of the case is underway under Article #240 of the criminal code, which provides for up to five years imprisonment for those convicted of violating safety standards at the workplace.
