Tbilisi hosts international congress ‘Hydropower Caspian and Central Asia’

For the second time in a row Georgia’s capital city of Tbilisi is hosting the international congress and exhibition ‘Hydropower Caspian and Central Asia’.
This is a professional platform for high-level participants to discuss key topics to guide the course for hydropower construction and operation in the Caspian and Central Asia region.
During the two-day event (February 14-15) high-profile speakers will discuss the changing role of hydropower in the energy sector and the benefits of interconnections beyond national borders.
Participants will review initiatives and commitments and discuss action priorities.
Over 100 delegates will visit Tbilisi to attend the ‘Hydropower Caspian and Central Asia’ congress. Guests will come from Turkey, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Russia, Kazakhstan and other countries.
From summer 2017 the Shuakhevi Hydro Power Plant (HPP) will be fully operational, helping Georgia tap into its hydropower potential and achieve energy self-sufficiency.
Two new hydropower plants (HPP) will be built in Georgia’s Svaneti region to increase the country’s power generation capacity. The construction of Mestiachala HPP 1 and Mestiachala HPP 2 started today on the river Mestiachala in the Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti region.
Germany is supporting Georgia in expanding its power network and modernising the infrastructure by providing €125 million in concession credit.
Dariali Hydro-electric Power Plant - the largest HPP in the history of independent Georgia – has officially opened in Dariali valley in the north-east of the country today.
Georgia is reducing dependence on imported energy by increasing domestic electricity production thanks to the Shuakhevi hydropower plant project which is being developed in Adjara region. The Shuakhevi HPP will generate 450 gigawatt (GW) hours of clean energy annually while reducing greenhouse gas emissions by more than 200,000 tonnes per year.
