Swine flu (H1N1) has caused one more death in Georgia.
A pregnant woman died from flu in Kutaisi.
Doctors performed a Caesarean section delivery to protect the health of the baby.
The patient was 38 weeks pregnant. She was transferred to a critical care unit. We performed a Caesarean delivery within 24 hours. The condition remained extremely serious during treatment”, stated a local doctor.
Previously the virus had killed a 53-year-old woman, living in Adjara, west Georgia.
Swine flu is contagious, and it spreads in the same way as the seasonal flu. The most serious complication of the flu is pneumonia, leading to fatal cases.
Minister of Health Davit Sergeenko stated earlier today that two deaths have been reported in Georgia during the current flu season.
We hope the flu will not reach epidemic levels. I urge the population to visit doctors after detecting early flu symptoms. We have two regrettable cases in Adjara and Kutaisi. Both persons were high-risk patients,” Sergeenko reported.
Moreover, director of the National Centre for Disease Control and Public Health Amiran Gamkrelidze warns pregnant women, children, older people and persons with chronic diseases to be cautious, taking into account that the strains of H1N1 are more aggressive than the previous year’s strain of H3.
The majority of the flu cases detected this year are H1N1. Currently, we have 221 reported cases per 100,000 citizens, we do not have any influenza outbreak”, Paata Imnadze, Scientific Director at National Centre for Disease Control and Public Health Georgia, reported.
Swine flu is the popular name for influenza caused by a relatively new strain of influenza virus A. It was responsible for the flu pandemic in 2009. The virus is officially known as influenza virus A/H1N1.
