Georgia’s Black Sea city of Batumi welcomes restored Drama Theatre

The restored building of the Ilia Chavchavadze Professional State Drama Theatre has opened in Georgia’s Black Sea resort city of Batumi.

The Cartu Foundation, a charity fund established and financed by Georgian tycoon and former Prime Minister Bidzina Ivanishvili, spent 14.5 million GEL ($5.45m/€4.78m) on the rehabilitation of the Drama Theater building in Batumi.

The Drama Theatre of Batumi is acquiring new life and I wish to congratulate all residents of Batumi and all of Georgia on this milestone,” stated Prime Minister of Georgia Mamuka Bakhtadze at the opening ceremony of the theatre yesterday.

Apart from the restoration of the facility, state-of-the-art lighting and sound amplification systems have been installed in the theatre, along with new stage mechanisms and modern technologies, which will enable the troupe to indulge in the most sophisticated experiments and host world-class theater performances. .

Large and small halls of the theatre will be able to have concurrent performances.

The theatre seats 480 people and is equipped with disability access.

The building has been restored so that every historic detail and unique wall paintings, exceptional chandeliers and colonnades have been preserved… The history of Batumi Drama Theatre dates back to the 70's of the 19th century. It has always stood out with its unique signature and it is very important to continue this tradition. The restored building of the Batumi Drama Theatre will enable us to promote and showcase Georgian art potential with its full might”, said Bakhtadze.

While in Batumi Bakhtadze also visited the construction site of the Batumi International Football Stadium.

The stadium will be built to comply with Category IV of the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) standards and it will seat 20,000 people.

Construction work will be completed by September 2020.
