Tbilisi hosts European week of sport for the first time this year

The opening ceremony of the European Week of Sport at Rike Park has been attended by government officials, representatives of the Georgian National Olympic Committee and national sports federations today.
Around 200,000 people will be involved in the event being held around the country over the course of a week. Nighttime sporting activities are planned for September 29 while on September 30 a closing ceremony will be held in Tbilisi.
Georgia has joined the European Commission’s initiative for the first time this year. The idea behind the EC’s initiative that has been around since 2015 is that being active is the solution to problems such as: obesity, loneliness, racism, depression and others. The initiative seeks to encourage people to join sport clubs and fitness centres and live an active life.
Around 40 countries join in on the week of sport this year from September 23 to 30 involving more than nine million people globally.
More than 100 children in Georgia’s highland Mulakhi village in mountainous Svaneti region will soon be the beneficiaries of a modern, well-equipped sport school.
Georgia’s Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili has announced that promoting a healthy lifestyle among children will be one of the Government’s main priorities. Kvirikashvili said his team will make efforts to promote sport and a healthy lifestyle in schools.
Tbilisi city hall plans to deliver professional equipment to sports unions and federations. selected sports are sambo, boxing, riding, shooting, wrestling, tennis and volleyball.
Judo will soon be added to the curriculum of kindergartens all around Georgia.
The 15th Council of Europe Conference of Ministers responsible for sport will be hosted this year in Tbilisi by the Ministry of Culture and Sport of Georgia on October 16.
