Young film director Ana Urushadze’s award-winning drama Scary Mother has been selected in a preliminary list of works to be considered for this year’s European Film Awards, a prize recognising “the greatest achievements” in European cinema.

The EFA Feature Film Selection, a list of 49 films from around the continent, was revealed by the EFA and EFA Productions earlier today.

It features films by notable directors like Paweł Pawlikowski, Sergei Loznitsa and Lars von Trier.

Among the works is Scary Mother, Urushadze’s 2017 Locarno International Film Festival First Feature Award-winning debut.

Also awarded the Asia Pacific Screen Awards Jury Grand Prize last year, it centres around a woman working on a novel, with the writing contrasting with her role as a mother.

/| When she reads extracts of her novel to her incredulous family, they are hurt by the unflattering depictions and deem it pornography.”

/| But Manana is undeterred, and leaves the home to follow her artistic destiny”, said a summary from the Sydney Film Festival, where it was screened earlier this year.

The selection of 49 films will be voted on by over 3,500 members of the European Film Academy, with nominations unveiled in November.

The final awards will be presented in Seville, Spain in December, at the 31st edition of the EFA. They will be handed out in 23 categories including European Film and European Director.
