Heavy rainfall, hail damages several villages in Eastern Georgia

Villages in the Telavi and Akhmeta municipalities of Kakheti region have been damaged as a result of heavy rainfall and hail last night.

Vineyards, corn plantations and fruit orchards have been devastated by the disaster which lasted for 30 minutes.

The Emergency Management Service has received 51 calls from Telavi and Akhmeta in total.

Disaster response operations are currently ongoing in Akhmeta. The population of the most damaged villages of Matani, Akhasheni and Kistauri are requesting help from the government since their harvest has been devastated.

“A special commission will calculate the amount of damage. We are not yet informed how the damage will be compensated for,” the mayor of Akhmeta Ioseb Karumashvili said.

Heavy rain caused problems In Tbilisi and adjacent areas as well. The Emergency Management Service received 127 calls in total as a result of flooding of houses and shops.

A building partially collapsed on Makashvili Street, no casualties have been reported. The Emergency Management Service has provided assistance to 70 families.
