Police seize large amount of undeclared goods

Investigation Service of Ministry of Finance has prevented two attempts to transport undeclared transit goods through Georgian customs service.
Two individuals have been charged.
"One of the accused has declared that the goods being transited from UAE through Poti sea port were 11,250 kilograms of milk powder. However, a study showed that the offender was trying to transit proteins worth 773,190 GEL [about 316,000 USD],” investigators said.
The second individual, driving via Sarpi customs service, has tried to import different types of undeclared textile goods worth 63,988 GEL [about 26,000 USD].
The offenders may face imprisonment from five to seven years.
Georgia’s logistics performance has improved, jumping 11 places from 130th to occupy the 119th position on the World Bank’s recently released Logistics Performance Index (LPI) 2018 report. The 2018 Logistics Performance Index scores countries on how efficiently they move goods across and within borders.
The agreement signed by Georgia and Russia in 2011 envisages setting up of a mechanism of customs administration and the monitoring of regional trade by third parties.
The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) names Georgia as the top trade reformers in the UNECE region with its "lean institutional set-up and paperless trading environment”.
Georgia and Europol are expanding joint efforts to better deal with different types of crime. Georgian Interior Minister Giorgi Gakharia and Europol's Director Rob Wainwright have signed a Liaison Agreement and a Memorandum of Understanding on secure communication line protocol.
