Georgian FM: ‘We have firm support in US Senate Foreign Affairs Committee’

Georgian Foreign Minister David Zalkaliani has stated in Washington today that Georgia has the firm support of the US Senate Foreign Affairs Committee and this support has already been revealed many times.

Zalkaliani’s statement came after his meeting with the Senate’s Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Bob Corker.

We spoke about the Georgia-US strategic partnership and the further enhancement of relations, challenges in the region and the situation in the Georgian occupied regions. I briefed him about human rights violations cases in the Abkhazia and South Ossetia (Tskhinvali) occupied regions of Georgia,” Zalkaliani said.

Zalkaliani stated that he also informed Corker about the Georgian government’s peace initiative to the population in the occupied territories.

Zalkaliani has been invited to Washington by the US State Secretary Mike Pompeo to participate in an international conference on religious freedom.

Zalkaliani is among 40 foreign ministers and top officials taking part in the event.

He said that he will speak about cases of restriction of freedom of religion in the occupied territories of Georgia during the international gathering.
