The Georgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) has announced that two Georgian citizens have survived a plane accident in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) that dates back to late January.

The announcement reports that based off yesterday’s information from the Georgian Embassy in Pretoria, South Africa, one of the citizens has been detained by oppositional forces in the country.

The other has been sent for medical treatment to the town of Goma to have his injuries tended to.

Georgian Defence Minister Levan Izoria said the Government of Georgia is doing its best to secure the release of the detained man.

The information is surfacing now after a period of speculation as to the fate of the two men in the crash.

The Ministry said the government of the Congo is continuing its investigation into the case and has been in constant communication with the Georgian authorities.

Given their status of private citizens, the Georgian MFA has not released the identity of these two individuals. The MFA says that they have not received inquiries from their families since the accident took place in January.

The men are known to be former military personnel.
