Romanian Foreign Minister Teodor Melescanu welcomes the progress Georgia has achieved in aligning with NATO and the European Union (EU).

Melescanu met with Georgian Foreign Minister Mikheil Janelidze in the framework of the Munich Security Conference yesterday.

The Romanian official voiced his country’s strong support for Georgia and its ongoing reform agenda.

He also underlined the role of Georgia as a leader among the Eastern Partnership countries, as well as in terms of participation in the NATO-led peacekeeping missions.

Melescanu announced that a high-level delegation from Romania will visit Georgia this year.

The sides exchanged their views over the bilateral relations between Georgia and Romania. Georgia’s energy and transit potential, ongoing infrastructure projects in the country and possibilities to expand political and economic cooperation between Georgia and Romania were also highlighted during the meeting.

Janelidze provided Melescanu with information on the situation in Georgia’s Russian-occupied territories and on the so-called referendum planned to be held in breakaway Tskhinvali region.
