Georgian PM meets with UN Secretary General, Turkish Prime Minister, others

Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili met with United Nations (UN) Secretary General Antonio Guterres at the Munich Security Conference in Germany last evening.

The main topics of the meeting included bilateral cooperation and the state of affairs in Georgia's occupied territories.

Kvirikashvili informed Guterres of the grievous situation along the occupation lines and human rights violations in the occupied territories of Georgia. Kvirikashvili expressed hope that the UN, under the leadership of Antonio Guterres, will step up its active role in the process of peaceful conflict resolution.

The Prime Minister also spoke of the steps taken by the Government of Georgia to ensure confidence building among the populations in the conflict regions.

Guterres expressed his willingness to visit Georgia at his earliest convenience.

Kvirikashvili held a meeting with High Representative of the European Union (EU) for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission Federica Mogherini.

Mogherini commended Georgia's ‘exceptional progress’ on its path towards closer ties with the EU. She said that the EU will complete the remaining procedures related to the cancellation of visa-requirements for Georgia ‘in the nearest future’.

A meeting was held with Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim as well. The Turkish official said ‘Georgia is Turkey's most important neighbor and strategic partner’.

The two officials spoke about the need to further intensify bilateral economic ties between the two countries and confirmed their commitment to deeper cooperation on important international projects, including the successful implementation of the Southern Gas Corridor.

The Munich Security Conference ran from February 17-19.
