The Georgian Interior Ministry said law enforcers have been sent to different parts of Georgia to prevent any possible violation during today’s Municipal Elections.

The statement says police officers all across the country are following a preliminary defined action plan to prevent and react to any possible case of election violation.

Moreover, they are being rotated from region to region to make sure all of them can cast their ballot.

The Interior Ministry has addressed everyone to refrain from any other interpretation over the issue.

Casting his ballot in today's municipal elections earlier today, Interior Minister Giorgi Mghebrishvili said "we have police officers at every polling station in the distance that is allowed by the law and we will do our best to avoid any conflict and violations.”

The Minister said it has not been necessary to engage police at any polling station and hoped that there will be no such necessity anywhere.

  • Today Georgians are voting for 2,058 members of 64 city councils (sakrebulo) and 64 municipal mayors.
  • Twenty-two political parties, five election blocs and one initiative group have registered their party lists for the elections.
  • To win the mayoral elections, candidates must clear a 50 percent threshold. If this is not reached, a second round of voting will be held.
