Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili says that Georgia’s new constitution is a major step forward on the path of the democratic development of the country.

Kvirikashvili issued a statement this morning, congratulating citizens on the adoption of the new edition of constitution.

"This is a modern, western-type document that is based on the national interests and that shall become the further guarantor of freedom, progress, stability and the European future of our country”, he said.

The PM added that each person who participated in the preparation of this document and each person who supported its adoption has contributed to progress and stable development of the country.

He also conveyd his gratitude to the Venice Commission, which, in Kvirikashvili’s words, worked hard with Georgia to form the new edition of the constitution.

"The Venice Commission confirmed in its final assessment that the constitutional amendments are based on the principles of democracy, the rule of law and protection of fundamental rights and that the constitutional reform constitutes a positive step towards consolidation and improvement of the country’s constitutional order”, Kvirikashvili said.

The PM believes that the new edition of the constitution strengthens the role and opportunities for the opposition, what will play a very important part in the democratic development of the country.

"I would like to congratulate the citizens of our country, whose aspirations and values are reflected in the basic law of the country and I would like to assure them that each and every step we take in the direction of strengthening and development of democracy will definitely affect their better future”, he said.
