The Lancet: “Newborn deaths reduced significantly in Georgia”

Global leading medical magazine the Lancet has published data showing that newborn deaths have reduced in Georgia.
The magazine said that neonatal deaths have decreased significantly in the country in the last 20 years.
It added that thanks to the reforms in maternal and child health since 2012, Georgia has achieved the Millennium Development Goals and reduced neonatal deaths by 2/3.

The next goal Georgia is aiming at now is to reduce neonatal mortality to at least as low as five per 1,000 live births by 2030.

The Georgian government released its National Maternal and Newborn Health Strategy for 2017-2030. This strategy aims to eliminate preventable deaths of mothers and newborns as well as stillbirths by 2030.
"Taking care of women’s rights and empowerment starts with taking care of her health,” Georgia’s first lady Maka Chichua told an international gathering of prenatal health experts.
Monitoring of maternal and newborn health was in focus at the Ministry of Labour, Health and Social Affairs of Georgia today where a new, electronic birth registry system was discussed by health officials in working in a range of areas.
The length of time from when a woman announces she wants an abortion to the time the termination takes place could increase from three to five days.
A 1 million GEL (about €288,329/$320,320) programme will be launched in Georgia’s Black Sea region of Adjara to provide assistance to infertile individuals living in the region, Tornike Rizhvadze, the Head of the local Government, announced on Tuesday.
