Iceland grants ‘safe country’ status to Georgia

Iceland has added Georgia to the list of safe countries.
According to the immigration service of Iceland, human rights are being protected in Georgia and the country’s state constitution ensures equality among the citizens.
Iceland’s immigration service has studied the current situation in Georgia and defined that the county has all the necessary preconditions for being defied as safe”, the statement said.
The immigration service also believes the international organisations working on human rights protection in Georgia have opportunity to freely carry out their activities without any obstacles.
Georgia has been ranked the seventh safest country in the world by global database Numbeo.
Belgium has reviewed its asylum system and for the first time awarded Georgia the status of ‘Safe Country of Origin’, meaning Georgia is now regarded as a safe country and it meets top international standards of law and judicial requirements.
Georgia has been ranked the third safest country in the world. Numbeo.com, the world’s largest database of user contributed data, surveyed 118 countries, and ranked South Korea, Singapore and Georgia as the top three safest nations.
"Germany knows well that no one is being politically persecuted in Georgia and we are discussing the possibility to grant Georgia the status of ‘safe country’,” Germany’s Federal Minister of Interior Thomas de Maiziere told his Georgian counterpart today.
Georgia is among the safest countries in the world in the latest travel advisory for United States (US) travellers published by the US State Department.
Cyprus has added Georgia to the list of safe countries. Cyprus is now the 13th country in the EU/Schengen zone to put Georgia on the safe country list. Following this decision, Georgian asylum-seekers’ applications will be examined in an accelerated mode.
