Georgian Interior Minister Giorgi Mgebrishvili has met with 12 Georgian police attaches from Georgian embassies in different countries.

The meeting summed up the work the attaches had carried out recently. Minister Mgebrishvili listened to the attaches’ detailed reports and gave them further instructions.

Mgebrishvili stressed the importance of having a police attache presented at the embassy in foreign countries. According to him, appointment of the police attaches in the partner states brought positive results with regard to the enhancement of police cooperation in the sphere of the fight against organised crime.

Georgia appointed police attaches in a number of its embassies abroad last year in order to increase the efficiency of police cooperation between Georgia and its partners.

Mgebrishvili said that the importance of police attaches in the European Union countries increased after Georgian citizens received the right to visa-free movement within the Schengen area earlier this year.

Mgebrishvili also stressed the importance of the recent agreement between Georgia and Europol on tackling cross-border crime and said that the Georgian Parliament will ratify the document soon. Once the agreement is ratified, Georgia will have its representative in Europol and it is expected that the cooperation between Georgia and the EU’s top law enforcement agency will intensify to tackle cross-border organised crime.
