US Budget 2018 includes $34.1m for Georgia

The U.S. Department of State has released the US Congressional Budget Justification for 2018, where $34.1 million is considered for Georgia.
In particular, $28 million funding will support Georgia’s efforts toward democratisation, economic development, Euro-Atlantic integration and resilience against Russian pressure.
Funds will support targeted efforts to enhance economic opportunities and increase access to objective sources of information for populations vulnerable to Russian influence, including in communities bordering the Russian occupied territories of South Ossetia and Abkhazia,” read the document.
Meanwhile, with $3 million Georgia will be able to address the growing transnational organised crime problem in the Caucasus region.
With $0.9 million Georgia will be able to implement its new strategic trade control law, including reforms of secondary legislation and training and equipment for its officers.
And finally, for training the Georgian armed forces the country will receive $2.2 million.
This year $80 million was allocated for Georgia in the state budget of the US.
The US budget for 2018 will be 29 percent reduced compared to this year.
The 2017 Budget of the United States, released by President Barack Obama today, includes funding for Georgia and other countries "most targeted by Russian aggression”.
The United States’ Defence Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) is providing $10 million USD to modernise the way Georgia protects its state borders.
President of the United States (US) Barack Obama has congratulated Giorgi Kvirikashvili on his confirmation as Georgia’s Prime Minister. Obama also invited Kvirikashvili to the upcoming Nuclear Security Summit in the US.
Georgia is a leading country in the region for its effective implementation of public administration reforms, said the European Union (EU) Delegation to Georgia.
The United States (US) will assist Georgia with an additional $20 million, announces Georgia’s Ministry of Finance.
Next year Georgia will have a state budget of 12 billion GEL to use for state agencies, projects, and to further the country.
The United States trade-investment mission, comprised of 26 companies including 12 large corporations, is now visiting Georgia to learn of investment opportunities the country has to offer.
Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili met with the US Secretary of Defense James Mattis at the 54th Munich Security Conference today. Thanking Mattis for his strong and active support towards Georgia, PM Kvirikashvili said the last year has been of the special importance for Georgia in terms of cooperation with the new US administration.

Ministry of Development lagging behind
Over-optimistic and incorrect planning of the budget, as well as delays in the implementation of projects by construction companies and problems related to the resettlement process are the main reasons behind budget unfulfillment, said First Deputy Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure and Chairman of Roads Department Irakli Karseladze in an interview with the Interpressnews.
