Georgian football player Valerian Gvilia's goal has been selected among the top 100 scored over the past year by world football's governing body FIFA.

In a special gala ceremony in Zurich, Switzerland on Monday the global football authority awarded the annual prize for the player of the year - the coveted Ballon d'Or - to Argentina's Lionel Messi.

Along with the main award the gala evening celebrated the goal of the year by awarding the Ferenc Puskas prize to Brazilian forward Wendell Lira.

Lira headed the final list of 100 scorers of the year's most beautiful goals which also featured an effort by Georgian midfielder Valerian (known to supporters as Vako) Gvilia.

The Georgian scored the goal for his former team Metalurg Zaporozhye within the country's national championship last September.

To set up the goal Gvilia combined with several of his teammates near and inside the Dnipro penalty area before sliding the ball past Dnipro goalkeeper.

Scored on the 89 minutes, the goal did not prevent Zaporozhye from losing the game 1:4 but was appreciated by commentators for the quality of passing and movement among the team's players.

Gvilia left the club later in the season and expected a move to Portugal's national championship over the next few weeks.
